How an MFi-Certified Tag Works:
An MFi-certified Tag is essentially a compatible device made by third-party manufacturers, certified under Apple’s MFi (Made for iPhone/iPad/iPod) program. The MFi certification ensures that these devices meet Apple’s strict standards for quality, compatibility, and safety. MFi-certified compatible trackers offer similar functionality but are built by other companies. Here’s how they work:
-
Bluetooth & Find My Network: MFi-certified alternatives also use Bluetooth technology to communicate with Apple’s Find My network. They leverage nearby Apple devices to anonymously update their location.
-
Find My App Integration: These devices are designed to work seamlessly with Apple’s Find My app, so you can track them. When you attach one to an item and mark it as lost, the same Find My network helps locate it.
-
No Ultra-Wideband (UWB): Most MFi-certified compatible devices don’t include UWB technology for Precision Finding, as the U1 chip is an Apple-exclusive feature. Therefore, while they still provide reliable tracking, they may not offer the highly accurate direction and distance guidance that Apple’s do.
-
Design & Features: MFi-certified trackers can vary in design and features. Some may include additional features such as louder speakers, longer battery life while maintaining compatibility with the Find My ecosystem.
-
Privacy and Security: MFi-certified devices are built with privacy in mind. They follow the same encrypted and anonymous location-sharing rules through the Find My network, ensuring user privacy is protected.
iPhone Compatibility MFI Certified Tags:
MFi-certified Tag-compatible trackers work with the following iPhone models:
- iPhone 6s and later: These devices can track MFi-certified trackers through Bluetooth and the Find My network.
- iPhone 11 and later: These models include UWB (Ultra-Wideband) technology, allowing them to use the Precision Finding feature. However, most MFi-certified trackers do not support this feature, as it requires Apple’s U1 chip.
All devices must be running iOS 14.5 or later to support the use of compatible MFi-certified trackers.
